Cyberwar: What Is It Good For?

By Lev Grossman on April 28, 2009

For years one of the fundamental questions facing any tech reporter was about cyberwarfare. Did it in fact exist? Was anybody actually cyberwarfighting? Other than disaffected Chinese teenagers? Or did we just sort of want them to, because it would be cool?

I guess now they are.

When American forces in Iraq wanted to lure members of Al Qaeda into a trap, they hacked into one of the group's computers and altered information that drove them into American gun sights.

When President George W. Bush ordered new ways to slow Iran's progress toward a nuclear bomb last year, he approved a plan for an experimental covert program — its results still unclear — to bore into their computers and undermine the project.

We are down, repeat, Omaha Thunder is down ...

  1. Well, duh. That's why you don't allow networked computers on your ship. (Unless Gaeta's trying to save your ass. (But you're still going to pay a price there. (And I'm not talking a seeing-Gaeta-suck-Hoshi's-face price. (But, yeah, that too.))))

  2. @ Lev - OK, first you got me to read Daemon based on your post here. (I'm about halfway through.) Now you put this up. Is your goal to keep me from using a computer ever again? With the way you're scaring me about networks, I'd think you were Admiral Adama.

  3. Don't listen to Church... it'd be a good idea to create a new race of mechanical beings with free will and the ability to manipulate computers and networks with shocking proficiency. What could possibly go wrong?
