So I'm in Seattle getting my pre-E3 briefing from Microsoft and I plum forgot to blog until now. (If anybody knows what plum means in that sentence, feel free to let me know.) I have no idea whatsoever what's going on in the wider world. But I wanted to write up a few notes about LeakyCon, where I was last week. I'm going to lay it on the line: LeakyCon was kind of awesome.
I didn't really know what to expect from it. First of all it was in Boston, where I rarely go willingly, because I'm from there, and that is where the Hellmouth is. Second, I didn't know whether fans would even want me there. The vast majority of Harry Potter fans -- like human beings in general -- have no idea who I am. Then there are other Harry Potter fans who have been annoyed by stuff I've written about Harry Potter. I mean God knows, I've been annoyed by some stuff I've written about Harry Potter. Plus I was giving a presentation about my book, which granted is related to Harry Potter, but still, why should anybody care?
But you walk in, and right off the bat you realize you are in the presence of people who are nerdy and don't care who knows it. Some people are in costume, some aren't. Some are old. Some are young. But all of them have paid actual money to go to a Harry Potter convention. There is a kind of moral bravery about that that just makes me happy.
And everybody was super-nice. I am not a wildly social person -- in fact I am a wildly anti-social person -- but every time I passed somebody with a LeakyCon name tag hanging from a LeakyCon lanyard, I felt an uncontrollable urge to talk to them. Sometimes I even did. If I say that LeakyCon felt like a very safe place, I don't know if that will convey what I mean, but that's what it felt like.
On Friday night there was a massive wizard rock show, in a huge hall with a cash bar at one end and a stage and a dance floor at the other. I did not dance, because I am massively old, but I did sit at a table and drink beer and grin goofily. Because that's how I felt: goofily happy. I want to be ironic about the whole thing, but there was something about LeakyCon that just defused all attempts at irony.

'Plum' is rural-speak for 'completely' or 'totally'. For example, "That Battlestar Galactica is plum awesome."
.
Or, "Those Cylons are plum evil."
.
Or, "It's plum insane that anyone covering geek culture for a mass media outlet would refuse to watch BSG."

I think it's actually "plumb," as in a plumb line, such that "I'm plumb tuckered out" means "I'm truly (or verifiably) tired."
Or not.

You're in Seattle? Sweet! If you tell me where you're staying I promise I'll pop by and bludgeon you silly with my S1 BSG DVD box. Or we can go all Clockwork Orange- I'll let you choose.
And I second the recoveringsociopath on the vernacular use of 'plumb'. As in, 'Those cylons didn't make a single plumb line in their entire BaseStar fleet."

Aww, you should have said hello! It was great. I had a wonderful time at LeakyCon - totally worth flying from Ireland.

@ recoveringsociopath - I think you may be right about the origins because a plumb line is used to make sure that something is level or 'true'. So it's a short hand approach to saying something is absolutely true. My 'completely' or 'totally' theory would also work in this context, I think. I base this not on any actual evidence, but only on my own rural up-bringing and old episodes of the Beverly Hillbillies.
.
Let's try one Jed Clampett sytle. "Weeeeelllllll doggies! I'm plum tuckered out from trying to get Lev to watch BSG."
.
(I have this mental picture of Lev sitting in a Seattle hotel room checking the comments and weeping bitter tears as another post dissolves into a flurry of off-shoot topics and BSG jokes....)

Lev! Don't watch BSG! It'd be a plum waste of your time!

@Kemper I think at this point Lev lives in perpetual fear of opening a hotel door and discovering one of us holding a box set of BSG, a roll of duct tape, and a pair of toothpicks.

@ Church - I'm not even joking about that because if someone on here pulls an Annie Wilkes on Lev, I want plausible deniability...

Lev: I don't blame you for not wanting to go to Boston, I've tried driving through there (pre-Big Dig). It was the stuff nightmares are made from. The one section I recall was pretty much all roundabouts with no street signs which made trying to find my great-aunts house impossible (by strange luck when we managed to find a phone to call her for directions we were only about two blocks away).
I'm looking forward to E3, lucky you for getting to go. I went in 2005 and 2006 with my (now, then fiance) wife and had a blast. If I were still working with the company I did then I'd be tempted to go again. Let us know all the fun stories.

Is it too late for me to develop plausible deniability?
Officer, I promise it wasn't me- it was another member of my genetically indistinguishable model number!

The word "plumb" is used in the manner you used it because you're trying to say you "straight up" forgot to blog.
