This stirs up a lot of weird emotions.
Riverworld falls into the surprisingly large group of SF novels that could accurately be tagged, "really really long, involved SF series that were confusingly sexually explicit for the age I was when I read them, i.e. 10-12." Other examples being the World of Tiers books (also by Philip Jose Farmer) and John Varley's Gaea series. I don't know if there is an appropriate age for a really thoughtful extended meditation on the mechanics of a dude doing a centaur, where the centaur has both dude and lady parts. But if there is it isn't 12.
This incarnation of Riverworld looks pretty sanitized, after the Syfy fashion, and somewhat sentimentalized (Dollhouse's Tamoh Penikett, unlucky in love again, is apparently searching for his girlie). As far as I can tell people have clothes on when they come back to life on the big river. My main memories of Riverworld revolve around the character of Richard Burton, about whom I to this day retain a large amount of historically accurate information. Like how once he got speared through both cheeks by a Somali warrior.
The part of the book that really held my attention back in the day was where Burton moves up and down the river by serially committing suicide, knowing that he'll be reincarnated in another place. I just didn't buy that anybody would have the sack to keep drowning themselves over and over again. But whatever, that's probably peanuts once you've taken a spear to the face.

Did Burton have it as hard as Brother Cavil? I don't think so...

"Dollhouse's Tamoh Penikett"?????!!!
Lev, if there was a way to reach through the screen and throttle you, surely today would have been the day. May Helo have mercy on your soul.

Tamoh Penikett's been having problems with the ladies well before he met Echo. Dolls are a piece of cake compared to dating Cylons.
Didn't Syfy already do some kind of Riverworld mini-series a few years back? (When they were still Sci Fi.) Or did I just accidently end up in a different timeline where it hasn't been done before?

I know exactly how you feel with Varley's Gaea books. I'm not sure what specifically I learned about sex from him, but I'm sure it wasn't Church Approved™. It didn't hurt that Freff's illustrations were practically porn - ooh, nipples! To this day I still see Halo as more of a riff on Titan than Ringworld, but I didn't know anyone who had read the books.
On an aside, if you ever happen to come across a graphic novel called "D'Arc Tangent" by the aforementioned Freff and Phil Foglio, read it. It's the best beginning to a space swashbuckler ever, and a sad commentary on how bad business decisions can kill great art.

The only way to view this post is as Lev taunting his devoted fanboys. There is no other way. Before this great Helo and Gaeta diss, peace might have been possible. But now, I feel a whole generation of posters must pass away before BSG can be forgotten.

Dennitzio: "I'm not sure what specifically I learned about sex from him, but I'm sure it wasn't Church Approved™"
Church: "No, I'm fine with them." (referring, I think, to Varley's Gaea books)
Come on Dennitzio, if you're going to be the one to shame the BSG crowd, you have to keep up!

Since we know that Lev and byron12 know each other off-line and that byron12 was the one who helped get the BSG avalanche started, I often get the sneaking suspicion that they're working us.
Lev - "I'm doing a post about Riverworld."
byron12 - "Oh, that's good. Throw in something about Penikett being on Dollhouse but don't mention BSG. That'll drive them nuts. Then I'll step in and fan the flames even more."
Lev - "Why are we doing this again? To get me to watch BSG? For the hit count?"
byron12 - "Nah. Just for funnsies."

I find it interesting that a good majority of the cast from BSG are in a lot of USA/SciFi movies and shows. I refuse to call it SyFy due to their logic is ridiculous.

Its also been a long time since I have read the books. Looks like I need to do some fast reading before its aired. All the more to scrutinize its inaccuracies.
