I really think the majority of WoW players won't leave due to the fact they have already sunk so much time into the game that continues to be entertaining that even a game with equal to slightly better appeal won't get people to switch.

The next MMO that takes over really needs to have a huge idea, predetermined fan base to build hype/press, amazing graphics and gameplay, and be as cheap or cheaper than WoW to play. Even then WoW still might overcome.

Short of Blizzard deciding to call it quits on WoW development (and i really can't think why they would) I think WoW will be around for a really long time and will just keep getting bigger and better.

It took me a long time to switch over from EQ to WoW. I've always been a hardcore raider, and the raid game in EQ had evolved into such an elegant machine that I was reluctant to leave it. Raiding in WoW was pretty primitive for a long time. The BC raids and Sunwell got better, but they weren't great.

In WotLK, the raid setup is fan-freakin-tastic. The content is accessible to every tier of raiders, from the utter newbs to the ultra hardcores. The hard modes and 'heroic' settings have made me the happiest panda ever. The easy modes are nice to do with friends who may not be as quality-inclined. The Firefighter encounter is my favorite raid ever, and that's saying something. It's legitimately difficult, and yet entirely manageable. It's also the cutest thing I have ever seen.

I think that's WoW's strength - it's totally accessible, and yet it provides tiers of gameplay that interest all levels of gamers. There's also a massive replayability factor. I'm not sure how Blizzard will top it, but I'm anxious to see them try.

LOL Peter... ;)

I've been playing WoW since 2005, and have been pretty happy with the overall experience. Too many players expect a complete 'hand-holding' process from Blizzard for the 14$/month, in my opinion. You get what you get whenever more than a few primates gather in a similar place; occasional chaos, frequent agenda pogroms, and thin slices of brilliance. Grin...

Often, I feel I'm getting my money's worth just by cruising the player forums on Blizzard's WoW site, let alone actually playing the game. 10 minutes there and you will feel better no matter what miserable state your personal level of development may be...

'For the Horde!'

Peter Ha, what world do you live in? WoW means "World of Warcraft". The game this article talks about.

And frankly, I don't know why people like WoW so much. I played for three weeks and it totally sucked due to the caliber of teenybopper players it attracts. Everything from being stalked to being harassed by whole guilds on non-PvP servers because I wouldn't PvP. The devs were no help at all.

They will never have my subscription again.
