Not 'game-changing' but definitely the best book I've read this year: The Gone-Away World by Nick Harkaway. Every single person I have lent it to has loved it.

Gonna have to check out those two as well now. Thanks Lev - more reading material for me! :oD

That's all Cory Doctorow writes about— He is an awful sci fi writer. Please readjust your taste meter.

"Makers" is great, I love all the culture-building references it has, the business aspect of it isn't that bad either, thanks for recommending it I'm going to read the next book you suggested too. And i'll probably visit techland.com more often now.

Long time lurker, first time poster. Just finished "Makers" on your suggestion, and I've got to say, it's by far the best book I've read all year. I couldn't keep myself from grinning when Doctorow sent Perry or Lester down some frantic stroke of genius, or clench my first when one of his "Evil Industry Henchmen" went for the throat of "The Ride".

(BSG forever!)

Oh! I can't wait to read them, but especially The Makers. "Speaking as a dude who's into tech and yet cannot code and has average mortal math skills, and who as a result has never made anything in his life except letters on a screen, I have a deeply romantic love of engineers and hackers." Change "dude" to "chick" in that first sentence, and you're describing me! I was just talking to my dad yesterday about how my dream is to be a hacker!

Once again your suggestions will probably end up on my Good Reads to-read list, but my humble offerings continue to fall on deaf ears....
