The Worst Live-Action Versions of Cartoon Classics

Springing out of bed to race my brother for the Fruit Loops and the remote was a Saturday morning ritual in our house.

Some weeks, he'd find the toy in the cereal box first. Other times, I'd elbow him in the head during our dash to the couch. (Hey, it was do or no My Little Pony.)

Cartoons are kid-world masterpieces. They tap into that crazy imagination of yours and cause you to jump off of the slide in an attempt to fly to Neverland. (No? Just me?) Still, favorite cartoons, be them TV series, movies or comics are sacred ground. To soil a perfectly wonderful cartoon is to tramp around on childhood memories. And who else can we depend on to beat a dead horse? Hollywood.

This week, we got word that the live-action version of Alvin and the Chipmunks will become a trilogy. Alvin and the Chipmunks the cartoon is great. The movie is a stinker. What gives? We're also totally confused by all this talk of a live-action Smurfs. How could you do this to us, Neil Patrick Harris?

I realize that lackluster remakes are all apart of Hollywood's regular shenanigans, but please, leave my favorite cartoons out of it.

  1. Woe is me if Shaymalan does Avatar: The Last Airbender. I found them recently Via netflix, they have the first season on streaming. IMHO by far the best written animation series I have yet to see. I probably shouldn't say this but I've cried a couple times while watching this awesome series. Riveting, funny, and well written. There is no way he could improve on the original, really.

  2. Perhaps it'd be easier to come up with a list of ones that are remotely watchable.

  4. I think the Alvin and the Chipmunks movie is very cute and rewatchable. I have yet to see 'The Squeakquel' - I am on the wait-list at my local library.
